Band Plays Carnegie Hall

Dieruff Band Plays Carnegie Hall AGAIN!
Dieruff High School band performed at the New York Invitational Band Festival at Carnegie Hall, New York City, on March 24. The band earned a rating of Silver (award categories are: Gold, Silver and Bronze), for their performance.

Among the many compliments the band received was from Dr. Terry Austin, Director of Bands from the University of West Virginia who stated “In the 9 years we have been doing this festival at Carnegie, your band (Dieruff) has chosen music that pays homage to not only two composers that were great historical composers, but also to the history of this place more than others before you. Congratulations to your students.”

The band performed a suite of songs from Leonard Bernstein's seminal work "Mass." Bernstein was the conductor of the NY Philharmonic for years and conducted at Carnegie for decades. He also was the composer of West Side Story. Additionally, they performed parts of Igor Stravinsky's "Firebird." Stravinsky conducted the Firebird at Carnegie for its United States premier in 1925.

It was a great night and an honor for the Dieruff Band – the only band in eastern Pennsylvania to be invited to perform three times at Carnegie Hall.
